The Winter Playreading season kicked of on Monday June 21 with Oedipus Schmoedipus by Tony Nicholls, directed by Julie Waddington. With a lively and talented cast of eight local actors the reading was well attended and received.
Three more playreadings will follow in the subsequent Mondays
June 28 sees Les Windspear direct Sean Riley’s Significant Others featuring Joan Murray, Clare Grey, Carmen Falk, Cam McKenzie, Mark Cutler, Bryonny Geeves and Anna Freeland.
In the spring of 1955, in a beach-side shack of Australia, émigré playwright Otto Helm puts the finishing touches to his latest masterpiece and stands on the edge of fame and fortune. Success and fulfilment seem assured…..
But for his Australian wife Margaret, fulfilment isn’t measured by dollars, and she sets about creating her own “masterpiece”.
Fifty years later, their daughter Celia, is forced to retrace the past and in doing so makes a shattering discovery. When the line between art and life becomes blurred, her life is altered forever.
This hypnotic play by award-winning playwright Sean Riley explores the private & intimate lives of Australian cultural icons and those that live in the shadows they cast; wives, lovers, daughters and significant others.
On July 5 Robert Jarman directs Unconfirmed Sightings by Michael Beresford and on July 12 Ryk Goddard directs a double bill by Sean Monro, This Isn’t Good & I’m Standing Here .
The playreadings give playwrights an opportunity to gain valuable feedback on the development of their script and are held at the Backspace Theatre starting at 7.30pm. The theatre is warm and the bar is open, so it’s a great way to fill a winter Monday night.
